 AND SAYING HELLO TO MY

NEW COMPANION ... SISTER SMITH!

My new companion, Sister Smith and me at Victoria's house! Food soooo Good!

Hello Mother and all!

Funny- I didn't even know it was the Superbowl this weekend until someone at church mentioned it. Haha. It's crazy the things the world knows about that you have no idea about as a missionary! But, we get to see tons of miracles happen and lives change that no one else gets to see....and I'd rather have that any day! So nanny nanny boo boo! Just kidding :-)

Well, my new companion is Sister Smith, and she is amazing!!!! I've known her my whole mission because we have both been in the Visitor's Center our whole missions so far, but it's cool to actually be her companion. She is from Wichita, Kansas. And she reminds me a lot of Brittany! She has a very calm yet strong presence but is also really sweet and goofy. Hehe. She's also super competitive and athletic which also reminds me a lot of Brittany! She is like the dodge ball master when we play in the mornings for our exercise as a zone. So we are having tons of fun together!!! And she is going to be an amazing sister trainer!

Well we had some cool experiences this past week! First, we had the most delicious dinner of my life yesterday!!! A member from our ward had her birthday celebration and invited us and her family made the most delicious traditional Mexican food on the planet! It was basically just beans, rice, tacos with chicken, carne asada, chorizo and homemade salsa and such, but it was SO GOOD. And, they made hot dogs wrapped in BACON. It was amazing. Probably because I haven't had a family dinner in a while, but either way it was just so good. Her family is so sweet! They go to the Spanish ward that Sister Smith last served in and the mom is the chef at the mission home. Amazing people and so loving!!!

We were also able to talk to a lot of neat people and there was one lady we talked to that I'll never forget. We were on Berkeley campus and she and her friend were sitting outside talking and we walked up to them (they were older, like middle-aged). They were super friendly and started asking us a lot of questions about us and our beliefs and what we do as missionaries. So as we were talking we got on the subject of faith, and talked about exercising our faith. And she asked, "Well how in the world do you exercise your faith?" And Sister Smith told her ways we do that - such as praying, reading scriptures, doing to church, and simply trying to follow and be like Christ. And then I added that it all starts with a desire. And for some reason, she thought that that was the most amazing thing she's ever heard. And she said wow....I didn't know that faith was all about having a desire first. And then she was a little sad that she had never learned that before (because she's religious). Then, we read her Alma 32:28, which talks all about this and after talking more about it, it just continued to hit her and she was very emotional! It was such a sweet experience. Near the end of the conversation she told us how grateful she was that we talked to her and that we made her whole day. She accepted a Book of Mormon, and although she didn't accept missionaries to visit, I'm so grateful Heavenly Father lead us to her. It funny because I didn't say much - but I guess that's what she needed to hear at that time.

Last week we also had a sweet experience in the Visitor's Center with an elderly man who came in who's wife recently passed. He was so torn and emotional and just needed someone to talk to. So Sister Smith and I spend a good amount of time talking with him and listening to his stories and memories of her. Then we showed him Meet the Mormons and it made him feel a lot better. I love the visitor's center! There are too many sweet experiences there that happen that I don't have time to write.

OH YEAH, Elder Andersen visited our mission on Saturday!!! We had a big missionary conference and it was so great to spend time with him and also Elder Maynes. I tell you, we have been so spoiled with all the visits from general authorities recently. And we are getting Elder Oaks in a few weeks for stake conference! Elder Andersen talked to us about how to learn about the Savior through the Book of Mormon, and that it's important that we know the Book of Mormon really well - but especially the parts that talk about His atonement. It was a huge motivator for all of us. I just seriously love when the general authorities come. Every time they do, and we get to see who they are and how they act, I feel like I get to know the Savior more each time. They are all just so loving, funny and down to earth! And they all love their wives and families so much. Elder Andersen's grand kids were up there with him when we was talking with us and it was so fun to see him interact with them.

Some other updates - T**** (recently got baptized) is doing wonderful and is going to the temple to do baptisms this week!!! And our investigator J*** is also doing wonderful!! We are just seeing so many miracles. We really need to find more people to teach but at the very least we have one awesome investigator and like 10 recent converts who are also wonderful (most of the moved in the ward last year).

Anyways, that's it for this week - sorry that I'm not the best storyteller so forgive me. I just really wish I could convey the awesomeness of all the experiences I've had recently. It's amazing the miracles that happen. I just continue to learn about the reality of Heavenly Father and our Savior. I guess that's the best way to put everything.

Love you all. Have a beautiful week!!!

Love,

SISTER JOHNSON'S MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2015 E-MAIL

 SUPER BUSY!

Hahah!  We still got a nice letter even though she had to rush off!

Hello Mother!
Okay, sorry last week I was focusing on a lot of other things and didn't have much time to email.....and it will be the same with this week! Haha sorry, it's been a crazy last few days. Here are some updates though:
1) Transfer calls were Saturday - I'm staying in Berkeley and my new companion is Sister Smith!! She is an awesome missionary and I am so excited to be with her, even though I am so sad that I won't be companions with Sister Orantes anymore :( Sister Orantes will be going full-pros to San Fransisco, Spanish speaking!!!

2) On Thursday we decided to go out for dinner in Berkeley and for some reason really wanted Papa John's pizza (haha). So we drove around Berkeley trying to find the one location we knew of. We finally were able to find it and after getting pizza, we walked out a girl approached us and asked if we are the missionaries who serve in the Berkeley Ward and we told her that we serve in the YSA ward. Anyways, after talking to her we discovered she is a member who got baptized last year and who is currently homeless. She is a very sweet girl and we were able to buy her some food and later on call our Bishop for help. She has a cell phone so that we can give her more information on who she can call for help, but sadly we haven't been able to get a hold of her since. Hopefully we will soon. It is amazing though how the Lord leads us places to find certain people that he wants us to help!

3) Thais got confirmed yesterday!!!! It was amazing. She is always so touched by the spirit! She is simply wonderful.
4) There's a lot of other cool stuff that happened but I don't have time to write, so sorry!!!

I love you all though! The church is true and Heavenly Father loves us. It's as simple as that!
Love,
Sister Johnson

SISTER JOHNSON'S JANUARY 19, 2015 E-MAIL

YIPPEEE!!

Thias and Sister Orantes

Hello Mother!

Sorry I don't have much time today so it will be a little short!!

This past week was amazing!! Thias' baptism was yesterday!!!!! It was soooo beautiful and she was so happy and overwhelmed. She is seriously a miracle and one of the greatest blessings I've seen on my mission, and no doubt one of the reasons I came on a mission. Geoff baptized her and said the baptism prayer in Portuguese!

Yayyyyyy Thais!!!!!!

On Friday Sister Orantes and I had to do apartment inspections for the sisters in the VC....so after a long hard day of inspecting and cleaning, we treated to ourselves to some yummy food! (Nations = delish burgers)

Alicia is a member who helped teach Thais.
She speaks was able to teach Thias in Portuguese.

 The Bezerkeley YSA Ward

We also were able to meet twice with our new investigator named J*** (who is amazing!!!) Overall a great week, and many blessings from the Lord! Love you all!!

Sister Johnson

SISTER JOHNSON'S JAN. 12, 2015 E-MAIL

"IN CONCLUSION ..."

50 YEARS AND 5 KIDS
CONGRATS TO
JACK AND MAILE BECKMAN
GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY - 50 YEARS!

Hello Mother Deary!

I'm so glad grandma was able to have a surprise birthday party!!!! (ERM ... THAT WOULD BE A 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY PARTY ... SHE'S NOT PAYING MUCH ATTENTION WHEN SHE READS MY EMAILS, HAHA!) You all are awesome for doing that for her! I know the trip was well worth it and glad you were able to see everyone! :D

This past week was awesome for us! We had MLC (Missionary Leadership Council) on Tuesday and talked about the results from last year and what we need to do this year to do better. We had wonderful trainings given by our assistants and President and Sister Meredith, and Sister Orantes and I gave our little spiel about Meet the Mormons being in the Visitor's Center and that it's a wonderful missionary tool. So bring people to see Meet the Mormons at the Mesa VC!!!!

We were also able to find 2 new investigators last week! Yay! One is a guy from China who visited Los Angeles a few weeks back and met missionaries there. They sent his info to us and he goes to UC Berkeley. He's very enthusiastic about learning! Another investigator we found is a miracle!! Sister Wang (who I served with in Moraga) and Sister Kwok found her in the Moraga ward on Sunday. She was sitting by herself and they didn't know who she was so they sat next to her. Lo and behold she is from Idaho, is here attending school and met with missionaries just recently before moving here. And since she's YSA aged we get to teach her! We met her last night and she is absolutely amazing. We saw many other blessings and miracles last week as well. We have 8 recent converts in our ward and soon to be 9 because T**** is getting baptized next week!!!!!! She is probably the biggest blessing we've had recently. She has so much faith, is so sweet and loving and is simply one of the most amazing people I've ever met!!! (Sister Orantes and I are going to take a trip to Brazil sometime in the future when she moves back to Brazil. Just fyi :-))

In conclusion, Heavenly Father never ceases to blow my mind. I love Him! And He loves me and you and everyone. Have a great week!!

Love,
Sister Johnson

Happy New Year!!

It's 2015! Unbelievable! And yayyyy, it is really neat to see "He is the Gift" up in Times Square!!! :-)

Last week was a fun week- even though Sister Orantes was sick for most of the week! She had a really bad throat infection (apparently it was strep because she didn't have a fever, so we just called it a throat infection) and then got a cold after that. So we were in for a lot of the week. But by the end of the week we were out and made good use of the time we had. We also had our New Year's eve party with our zone on Wednesday night! We watched How to Train Your Dragon 2 and The Grinch. 'Twas a good time! We also got to watch Meet the Mormons again Thursday morning for our Visitor's Center training. I tell ya, that movie is so good!!! It's so inspiring and a perfect missionary tool. It will be at the Mesa Visitor's Center, so bring friends to see it!!!!! It will only be in Visitor's Centers for the next 6 months if you want to see it!

We also a few lessons last week with Th***, who is A-MAZ-ING. She's already read the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price and Relief Society manual book thing?!?! What the heck?? And she already pays her tithing and fast offerings and is already wanting to prepare for the temple even though we haven't even taught her about temples yet!! So we are in heaven with her. She bore her testimony yesterday in church and told everyone she's getting baptized on January 18! Before she went up she gave us this dreaded look of death. She was nervous haha. It was so funny.

Some other fun things last week - we went to a tiny Brazilian cafe in Berkeley and met the owner, Pedro! Super funny guy! He's had a lot of return missionaries from Brazil go there so he knows who missionaries are. We meet the coolest people in Berkeley and at the Visitor's Center from all over the world. It's so fun! Also, Sister Orantes and I for the new year are making goals to eat healthier. Today we bought a bunch of fruits and veggies to make green smoothies and have healthy, easy dinners. We are excited! Yay for a New Year to start fresh. It's also a great time to make spiritual goals! I'm still working on mine haha, but I am excited to figure out what I can do to be a better servant to the Lord. He seriously puts miracles right in front of us all the time and I'm so grateful for Him.

Love you all!!! Have a fabulous week!

LAUREN'S DEC. 29, 2014 E-MAIL - THE CHRISTMAS PHONE CALL and PICTURES!

OUR CHRISTMAS DAY PHONE CALL  WITH LAUREN!!!

On Christmas Day I was ready by the phone.  I thought Lauren would be calling in at 10:30 our time but it turned out she meant 10:30 her time.  So when she finally did call she said she was going to have breakfast with the family she was visiting and then she would call us back.  So, around 12:30 she finally called in.  It took us 20 minutes to get the Google hangout up and running because Lauren forgot to bring her instructions and she didn't remember her account number.  But after a little while we were all online together for about 40 minutes and it was GREAT!

Hello Mother dear!

It was great seeing you too! Yeah it was like I never left ya'll. By the way I met someone the other night at the VC from Alabama. I told him you are from Birmingham (right??) and he said he lives 30 minutes from there. And then I started speaking in a Southern accent to him haha.

Anyways, yes I loved the boxes you sent!! Thank you so much! They went to the mission home so I got them from there. There was like 50 billion boxes the week of Christmas for all the missionaries. Okay maybe not that many. But a lot. I love the scarves and the tops you got me! I actually was wanting a black sweater/cardigan and really wanted another plain top, so it was like you read my mind. :) And I really wanted scarves just like the ones you got me! So 10 points for you! The only thing I can't wear is the animal print scarf because we're not allowed to wear animal print. :( But, I love everything else! And grandma's clothes are really cute too! I'll send back anything that I can't wear/doesn't fit well. As for the pj's, yes I like them! I wore them when I was sick so I called them my sick pj's. And I mainly wanted my stripped footie pjs sent to me so that Sister Orantes and I could wear our footie pjs together hehe :) I didn't want to buy new ones because they are expensive. It kept me warm as well though!

The whole past month has just been a wonderful experience overall at the Visitors' Center. I had a lot of sweet experiences talking with people, getting to know them and doing my best to help them in whatever way I could during the short time we had together. I was able to bear my testimony a lot and teach from the Book of Mormon, which was a huge blessing. I really am grateful for the Book of Mormon and the power it has. Christmas time has been very special and I was lucky to have spent it at the Visitors' Center!!

Here are some pictures from the past week from Lauren!
 All the presents!
Sister Braithwaite and Sister Hueffner our roommates!
The Visitor's Center Christmas Dinner for the missionaries!
The family we visited on Christmas Day!
Sister Orantes LOVES the Christmas socks you gave her!

LAUREN'S DEC, 15, 2014 E-MAIL - ITS ALMOST CHRISTMAS!

 MERRY CHRISTMAS!
FUN AND FRIENDS WILL MAKE IT
MERRY!

Yeah for the Meyers!  We love it when they visit the temple!
Lauren with Jaimi Meyers last week.

Brother and Sister Hatch at the Oakland Temple!!  They visited this week!
And look who was waiting at the door of the Visitor's Center to greet them!

White Elephant Gifts for the Zone Conference party!
She said the foot massager is in the package with the yellow bow and everyone was trading for it!
Hey!  She didn't tell us what she got!
You can tell some of those packages were "wrapped" by Elders!

 Sister Orantes and Sister Johnson

They look like they are having lots of fun!

The Christmas Tree that Steve Johnson decorated BY HIMSELF!
There is a first time for everything.

Greetings!

Hahaha the tree looks.......interesting! Hahaha just kidding, tell Dad I'm proud of him too and that it looks great! Just maybe consider taking some of the ribbon off... hehe :-) And I did get the big poster from the ward! I forgot to thank him! So thank you Daddio, it was so nice and everyone was so sweet to do that!! And I'm happy for Brad that he's almost done with school. Hallelujah!

Yes it was good to see the Meyer's again! They also brought me some peppermint bark that I haven't devoured yet but will soon! :-)

It was raining a lot at the beginning of the week so it was slow in the VC, but the last few nights really picked up! I think it will stay pretty busy from now on too since Christmas is approaching us. By the way, have you watched He is the Gift yet? You probably have. Just reminding you if you haven't! And we got those red scarves from Salt Lake. They want us to wear them when we're at the front door and on outside tour for Christmas but we have also been wearing them in the Visitor's Center to match. :) And that picture is from us practicing our Christmas program! We are singing Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at the Visitor's Center. Did I tell you I'm playing flute for some of the songs? :) The songs this year are really simple and easy because we didn't have much time to put something together, but it is going to be fun. :) So that's one of the cool bonuses about being a VC sister is you get to do a Christmas program!

This past week we also had our Christmas Zone conference! Sister Orantes and I gave a training and it went really well (thank heavens) and we had a really nice Christmas lunch provided by the Oakland Stake and then a white elephant gift exchange in each zone! (There were 3 zones at our conference.) The gift I brought was a foot massage machine that has been in our apartment for a long time. When I first got there we gave a lot of stuff away and I wanted to give it away because it was in the way and really dirty but I never got around to it. I'm happy I didn't though because it was the perfect white elephant gift! So I cleaned it all up and wrapped it (never tested it to see if it actually worked though...oops :)) and it was a hit! A lot of missionaries wanted it and kept stealing it from people during the exchange. Haha so I was happy about that :) The gift that President and Sister Meredith gave all the missionaries is a temple recommend holder with a picture of the Oakland Temple, the Golden Gate bridge, and a quote and their names signed on the back. It was so nice of them!! So that was a fun day!

Other than that and the VC being a blast with all the sisters, one of our investigator's who is going to get baptized in January continues to blow our minds because of how awesome she is. She visited Washington D.C. over the weekend and before we told her to look up what ward she can go to on Sunday there, she already had! And she had a great experience at church there by herself and also a great experience that she told us about when she visited the temple. I just think it's amazing how the Lord let's miracles happen all the time if we're obedient, seeking and praying for them. :)

Oh yeah! We got transfer calls on Saturday and I am staying in Berkeley with Sister Orantes! Woohoo! We are so happy we get to stay together. There are a lot of other changes though happening in the VC with the sisters (all of them will still be in the visitor's center, they are mostly just getting switched around).

As for calling on Christmas, I will let you know the details next Monday. I do know that it will be in the morning of Christmas day though!

That's all for this week - here are some more pictures! Love you!!!

Love,
Sister Johnson
